What Inspires you to Create?
The #WickedWednesday newsletter is inspired by my desire to share stories focused on promoting community and creating positive change, something we all need more of nowadays.
This past weekend, I had the immense privilege of participating in not just one but TWO art-related events. During each event, I was challenged to create a piece of art (a collage and a painting) in which there were lose guidelines but no hard and fast rules. One of the things I love most about art is the fact "coloring inside the lines" is not actually required (contrary to what you were taught in elementary school).
Gathering with other people (sometimes strangers, sometimes friends and family) while creating something for solely for yourself is quickly becoming my new favorite past time.
What do you do just for you?
On Friday night, I went to my favorite local art spot in Framingham, The Danforth Art Museum. They host many events but this one was a "happy hour" dedicated to making your own silhouette collage, inspired by Danforth’s permanent collection.
It was a sensory experience while I sat still and someone traced my profile onto construction paper. Once done, there was a plethora of materials with eclectic designs to use to collage. Here is what I created and the art director called "energetic"!
Sunday was a paint and sip class with my neighbor friend. We both appreciated the time to be together and simultaneously tapped into our creative selves - creating different products despite having similar guidelines.
As someone who thrives when the rule book is thrown out the window, I appreciate art even more now as a medium to explore and challenge my own thoughts on what art actually is. Now, we aren't always going to an event in a place specifically dedicated to art, so I challenge you, #WickedWriters, to share:
What spaces and things inspire you to create?
Happy Mother's Day
Yes, this is my first mother's day as a dog mom and I'm so excited! It's no secret I'm obsessed with Princess Parker and thrilled to have her in our lives. She had a rough April with stitches and conjunctivitis, so here's to hoping May is better.
Did I become a homeowner just so we could have a dog? Who's to say...
To all the moms and caretakers out there, regardless of what it looks like, I hope you feel the love and do something for yourself.
The Judging Porch Update
It's a month until my 35th birthday and I'll be honest, work on my book, The Judging Porch, has been minimal. Then again, this was a self-imposed deadline and we know a work of art is something that always in progress :)
I recently submitted some digital art pieces to a juried exhibition and while I was not selected, I'm proud to have even put my name in the ring! This has inspired me to keep looking for opportunities to present my work to others regardless of outcome.
Stay tuned as I start to get my art out into the world.
